Roughly 80% of New Orleans, one of the pivotal birthplaces of jazz, was destroyed by hurricane Katrina (approx. 170,000 houses), principally affecting the less prosperous population, including a large number of musicians. Many of them lost everything and are still housed only provisionally; some far from their home. They have lost or significantly been limited in all their former social connections and in particular their opportunities to make music with others.
Government aid does not reach everybody who needs it. Without the help and support of friends, many can hardly survive.
Whether musicians or listeners, everyone with a love for jazz should be concerned that this city and its music scene are reconstructed. Already, too many cultural assets (sheet music, manuscripts, books, etc.) were destroyed in the flood.
